Bryson Recycling collected record levels of garden waste through their garden waste service this year, resulting in a £7869 charity donation through their “Recycling Rewards” campaign.
Through this annual initiative, now in its fourth year, Bryson donates £1 to charity for every tonne of garden waste collected through their brown bin collection service that they provide on behalf of Conwy County Borough Council.
From the start of October 2022 to the end of September 2023, Bryson collected 7869 tonnes of garden waste, setting their donation amount at £7869. This year they shortlisted three charities, Banc Bwyd Conwy Wledig (Rural Conwy Food Bank), Lily Foundation and Resource CIC, and asked Conwy residents to help them choose how much to donate to each through an online vote.
Banc Bwyd Conwy Wledig serves the residents of Llanrwst and rural areas within Conwy County Borough Council by providing food parcels to people facing hardship. They received 48% of the votes resulting in a donation of £3777. Commenting on the donation, Cllr Nia Clwyd Owen and Cllr Gwennol Ellis from Banc Bwyd Conwy Wledig said: “We are delighted that Banc Bwyd Conwy Wledig is the recipient of this donation. It will be such a great help to us as we face the busiest time of year with record numbers of people needing emergency food parcels throughout Wales and Conwy county, including the rural areas. Households continue to face difficulties with the cost of living crisis, and we are grateful that we are able to offer help and support. All donations, however big or small, really do make a difference. Diolch yn fawr iawn!”
The Lily Foundation, the UK’s leading mitochondrial disease charity and the largest charitable funder of mitochondrial research in Europe. They received 33% of the vote and a donation of £2597. Liz Curtis, CEO of The Lily Foundation said: “The Lily Foundation would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Bryson Recycling for this amazing donation. As a charity that supports those affected by mitochondrial disease, a debilitating rare genetic condition, for which there is no cure and no effective treatment, we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to not only raise funds, but to raise awareness too. We would also like to say a massive thank you to Ryan for the nomination! This donation will go directly towards supporting those affected by mito and of course towards finding that cure!”
ReSource CIC, a not for profit committed to making a positive impact on the local community and environment through eco-sustainable activities. They received 19% of the vote and a donation of £1495. Janine Cusworth, Founder/Managing Director of Resource CIC said: “We are delighted to have received a nomination from Bryson to be put forward for this award and thank the community for voting for us to win a share. These funds will help support adults that volunteer and work with ReSource to realise their potential through providing training and support. We look forward to continuing to work with Bryson into the future.”
Cllr Geoff Stewart, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and the Environment, said: “This is a great boost for these good causes – by recycling garden waste, local residents are not just benefitting the environment, they’re also helping charities at the same time. We encourage residents to keep on recycling so the Recycling Rewards scheme can help even more.”
Mark Ellis, Community Engagement Manager from Bryson Recycling said: “This year’s campaign has been our biggest so far, with our highest ever donation and over 5000 people voting on our online poll. Thank you to all the local residents who got involved in the campaign this year – either by voting for their favourite charity or by recycling their garden waste.”
